  2. Dear Sir,
I was rather taken by your finely realistic paintings of the sprats, cow’s tongue and “Within & Without”, ad of more recent work like the cypress series. Here the mood takes the viewer beyond realistic depiction into the world of night and dreams, or so it seems.
The landscapes remind me somewhat of Elie Shamir’s, with whom I worked in the Hula Valley in March 2009. (I hope you don’t take that as an unfavourable comparison!) It was my first visit to Israel, and it made a great impression. I fell in love with Golan Heights, a lush green after rain, and I hope to return there to paint. Jerusalem in itself seems like a great adventure, beckoning to me to spend a few weeks working there.
Looking for like-minded spirits I’m surfing the web for artists working in Israel, and struck gold in the JSS.
Thank you for adding beautiful things to the world!

    Dear Robin,

Thank you for your kind words and taking the trouble to write down your thoughts.

If you find yourself in Israel again please contact me or the school. It would be a pleasure to meet you. Alternatively we will soon be announcing both on this blog, Facebook and elsewhere our new Italy program which is going to be something quite out of the ordinary. Keep an eye out for it.

When Eli Shamir lived in Jerusalem he indeed was a frequent visitor to my studio – I’m glad to see something rubbed-off… He also wrote an interesting piece about me in Studio Magazine back then. Thanks again for making contact. Best, IH

    Dear Israel,

I would like to be in touch with you regarding Barry Rosenthal.

My mother said you are trying to reach him.
    That is just great.

Hope all is well. The works are incredible.

    Hello Israel,
I studied under you at the Maryland Institute, 1976-1982, enjoying the weekly trips to the National Gallery to copy the masters. I copied Titian which you gave excellent feedback on old masters’ glazing techniques. I’m still painting lead on linen and with the same techniques and mediums. Good to see Art Studio school in Jerusalem. Suzanne Leter

  8. Dear Israel,
I studied with you at MICA in 1974/75 and have continued painting. My work has evolved over the years but I still paint in oil. I am teaching painting and drawing at Emmanuel College in Boston and think of you and your work often. I have enjoyed following your work as well as news of JSS.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

    HI Israel:
I’m a former student of Dick Cunningham’s. I’m planning to visit Israel soon, leaving NY on May 31, will be based in Tel Aviv with my friends there. I am hoping to meet you at some point during my stay, if you have time, I’ll be in Israel for two weeks. I’ll be attending my friends’ daughter’s wedding on June 7th, but will have time before and after, so I hope we can get together. I’ve followed your work from afar, although I have met you a few times, once in Brooklyn at the BM Art School (where I attended Cunningham’s class), and once at an opening of yours at Marlborough. I was in the same class as Lawrence.

    Best regards.

    Dear Israel,

Looked at your paintings again, after the light of Civita Castellana. An ongoing learning, therefore, and I’m still quietly amazed by those trees and by the ‘modelling’ heft you manage , with those buildings in the Papingno painting re the excoriations left/right of your hillside..I keep going back to your pictures, and to Hawthorne, trying to ‘remember’ all of this laying on of paint when I pick up a brush, to keep the light on the end of my nose or whatever it is,

    Very Best,
    Robyn
