Figuration in 2011
This Wednesday, January 5 at 8 PM the JSS will host a Panel Discussion: “The Emerging Israeli Figuration – in Context.” The panel will include American artists Ken Kewley and Stuart Shils – along with JSS Founder and Artistic Director, Israel Hershberg. The panel will explore the state of figurative painting in classrooms, schools and galleries around the world, as well as the role of Jerusalem and the JSS as catalysts in this movement. Beginning with an exploration of interconnecting words such as figuration, abstraction and perception, the questions and accompanying images will investigate their flux and praxis in contemporary painting, moving from a look at artists around the world to what is happening specifically in Israel and at the JSS.
This special event will coincide with the Grand Opening of the new JSS “Studio Annex”, just 250 steps away from the JSS main building at #4 Yad Harutzim Street. Click here for Map of Studio Annex.

With Ken Kewley, Stuart Shils and Israel Hershberg
Ken Kewley is currently the focus of an extensive solo exhibition at Rothschild Fine Art, “Paintings and Collages: 2000-2010.” Featuring figures, still lifes, “Dressing Room” paintings, transcriptions, landscapes and abstractions in a variety of techniques – oil, acrylic and collage – Kewley’s work is characterized by the dialogue between abstract and figurative art, with a masterful use of geometric shapes and sheer delight in color.
Also, an update to share regarding the new MassArt summer workshop that artist Catherine Kehoe will be leading this summer in Art New England at Bennington College, Vermont. “The Difference Between Things: Still Life Painting with Catherine Kehoe” will take place from July 24-30, 2011 and is now open for registration here.
Represented by Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston with an upcoming solo show slated for March, Kehoe was recently interviewed here on the JSS blog. During the academic year she teaches “Painting: Powers of Observation” at MassArt.
